CASE STUDY
Driving Employee Engagement at a Leading Cultural Institution
Introduction
A New York cultural institution aimed to reduce waste in its staff cafeteria while demonstrating its commitment to creating a sustainable workplace for employees. With limited resources, they sought a partner to implement a reusable dishware solution and sustain employee engagement over time.
Challenge
Limited resources meant the institution needed a comprehensive reusable solution that required minimal internal effort but still encouraged consistent participation. Ongoing employee engagement was essential to maintaining high return rates and fostering a workplace culture around sustainability.
Solution
Re:Dish implemented its Reusable Dishware Program, supplying reusable containers and managing all washing and restocking. To encourage participation, Re:Dish provided a comprehensive communications package and ongoing on-site support to reinforce reuse behaviors.
Recognizing that employees are motivated by different factors, Re:Dish introduced diverse engagement strategies over time. These included educational activations, contests leveraging the QR codes on reusable items to track their reuse, and creative initiatives like a Climate Art exhibit featuring works on environmental themes outside the cafeteria.

Results
Re:Dish’s Reusable Dishware Program has become a natural part of employees’ routines, embedding sustainability into the institution’s workplace culture. So far, the program has achieved:

-
14,500 lbs of waste diverted
-
34,100 kg of CO2e not emitted
-
77,800 gallons of water saved
